Upcoming Presentation: POWs on the Lake of the Woods

This Sunday, August 4th, 2024, Kenora’s The Muse (The Lake of the Woods Museum and the Douglas Family Art Centre) will be hosting a virtual presentation by yours truly. Coinciding with the museum’s new exhibit, Temporary Enemies, Permanent Friends: Prisoners of war on Lake of the Woods, I will be presenting my research on prisoners of war working from camps on Lake of the Woods.

Focusing primarily at the Ontario-Minnesota Pulp & Paper Company’s use of POW labour, my presentation explores into the lives of hundreds of POWs who lived and worked in the company’s camps in the Lake of the Woods area between 1943 and 1946. Using period photographs, art, archival records, and memoirs, I will look at how prisoners reacted and adapted to their new lives in the bush.

If you happen to find yourself in Kenora this weekend, you can attend in person at The Muse or, if not, the presentation should be available for streaming at this link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81884201736.

The presentation begins at 2:00 p.m. (CST) and admission is by donation.
